Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country." Barack Obama stands today as the first African-American to hold office being the 44th president of the United States. He was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996, serving from 1997 to 2004. In the year 2000, Obama ran for Democratic primary of the U.S. House of Representatives seat held by four-term candidate Bobby Rush but failed. Contended to run, he created a campaign committee in 2002, and began raising funds for a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2004. August of that year Obama expressed his views on stem cell research, abortion, gun control, school vouchers and tax cuts; these views discussed helped in the 70 percent of votes he achieved. Obama winning his debates became the third African-American elected to the U.S. Senate since the Reconstruction. Four years later in the year 2008 he was elected to the U.S. presidency choosing running mate Delaware Senator Joseph Biden and on November 4, 2008, Barack Obama defeated Republican presidential nominee John McCain and began his presidency. In 2011 President Obama conducted a covert operation in Pakistan allowing a team of U.S. Navy SEALs to kill infamous al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, Obama also promoted “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” allowing openly gay troops to serve in the US Armed Forces. In the recent October, 2012 Presidential debate between himself and Governor Romney they discussed the issues of health care and deficit problems they also spoke about the issue on government expenditures.

Mitt Romney is the son of former Michigan Governor George Romney. He ran for Massachusetts Senate in 1994, but was defeated by Ted Kennedy. He became governor of Massachusetts in 2003 and ran for the Republican nomination in the 2008 election but lost to candidate John McCain, but he kept his options open for possible future presidential runs. Romney published a book called No Apology: The Case for American Greatness, which basically talks about his campaign platform and his views on key issues. In June 2011; Romney decided to run in the Presidential nomination as a Republican against Obama. After he chose U.S. Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate in May 2012, he was officially named the Republican Party’s presidential nominee. Once Romney announced his Republican nomination on the presidential election, he made comments about tax, the economy, and the war on terror. His critics always tell him that he always changes his position on key issues including abortion and health care. On abortion, Romney previously supported abortion rights but in 1994, he opposed to it and thinks states should be allowed to ban abortions. On health care, he opposes Obama’s health care reform program but created a very similar legislation in Massachusetts that Romney supported as a governor. On the economy, he wants to make Bush tax cuts permanent and lower corporate tax rate to 25%. On immigration, when Romney becomes president he wants to veto the Dream Act which grants illegal immigrants a path to citizenship but will give it to the people in the military services. On same sex marriage, Romney opposes it but supports legal unions and supports Don't Ask, Don't Tell but favors gays serving in the military. He also supported ENDA to ban anti-gay employer discrimination.

Ron Paul
Full Name: Ronald Earnest Paul
Date of Birth: August 20, 1935
Place of Birth: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Alma Mater: Gettysburg College and Duke University of Medicine
Profession: Medical Doctor, Politician, and Author
Political Party: Republican
Ron Paul became active in Politics in the 1970's and was elected in 1978 as a Republican. Four years later in 1982 he expressed his pro-life and anti-federal government views in his 1983's Abortion and Liberty book. In 1988 he became the presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party but in mid-1990s Paul returned to the Republican Party and won the general election in 1996. He remained a member of the House of Representatives ever since. The 2012 presidential campaign of U.S. Representative Ron Paul officially began in 2011, when he announced his candidacy for the 2012 Republican Party nomination for the U.S. Presidency. Although frequently mentioned by political observers as a possible candidate, Paul stopped short of candidacy before May 2011. On April 14, 2011, Paul announced the formation of a "testing-the-waters" account, and had stated that he would decide whether or not he would enter the race by at least early May. He announced the formation of an exploratory committee late April, 2011, in Des Moines, Iowa and declared his candidacy for President of the United States on May 13, 2011 in Exeter, New Hampshire. As of mid-April 2012, the campaign raised more than $38 million. Paul then decided he would end active campaigning for the remaining primary states; and instead focus on delegate selection conventions at the state level which he announced on May 14, 2012. Two months later on July 14, 2012, Paul failed to win a plurality of delegates at the final convention in the state of Nebraska, which sadly ended his ability to ensure a speaking spot at the Republican National Convention at the 2012 Republican National Convention; Paul's campaign won 190 delegates.

The three candidates in our above presentation have several things in common, firstly they all have a love for politics and were all authors at one time in their life. They do agree that they face issues within the country but disagree to the ways in which steps should be taken in fixing the problems. President Obama has no issues with same sex marriages while Romney opposes two persons of the same sex joining union. The candidates have their reasons for the measures and steps they have taken whether past, present or the future, choosing your US president this election would be difficult concerning all the issues that are to be dealth with also thought about. Candidates can speak about change but who here can really prove it ? Luckily at the end every one of the candidates can agree that they love their country America.
